About Varicose VeinsThe varicose veins that we see are near the surface of the skin, are branches of the major leg veins (the great saphenous vein and the small saphenous vein). The most common cause of vein reflux (and varicose veins) is a failure of the great saphenous vein (the major vein in the leg), starting in the groin, even though the varicose veins appear in lower regions (knee, calf, and lower thigh).
